The number five appears in many areas of life. In maths, it is a prime and a Fibonacci number, and shapes like pentagons and pentagrams are based on it. In nature, it shows up in our five fingers and toes, the five senses, and in flowers and the arms of a starfish. Throughout history, humans have used groups of five for counting and organizing. Five stands out because it connects maths, nature, culture, and human life in a simple and meaningful way.

At the height of a Scottish summer, the sun sets an hour before midnight, but it does not get dark. What remains is a glow, a memory of daylight. You can still distinguish colours and shapes, but all plants and buildings appear otherworldly, somewhat magical. The collage ‘Midnight Garden’ was inspired by one of those nights in my cottage garden up north. There are no fences, every plant is wild. To me they are nameless, yet of extraordinary beauty.
